Fuel System Problems That Prevent Starting
When your generator refuses to start, the fuel system is often the culprit. Here are the most common fuel-related causes and how to diagnose them.
1. Empty or Low Fuel Tank
The most obvious cause. Check the fuel gauge and physically inspect the tank level.
2. Clogged Fuel Filter
A blocked filter prevents fuel from reaching the injectors. Replace the filter if it hasn’t been changed recently.
3. Air in the Fuel System
Air pockets in the fuel lines prevent proper fuel delivery. Bleed the fuel system following your engine manual’s procedure.
4. Faulty Fuel Lift Pump
The lift pump moves fuel from the tank to the injection system. If it fails, no fuel reaches the engine.
5. Stuck or Leaking Fuel Injectors
Injectors that are stuck open or closed, or leaking, will prevent proper combustion.
6. Contaminated Fuel
Water, algae, or debris in the fuel can completely disable the fuel system. Drain and replace contaminated fuel.
7. Faulty Fuel Shut-off Solenoid
The fuel shut-off solenoid controls fuel flow. If it fails in the closed position, no fuel reaches the engine.
Diagnostic Checklist
- Check fuel level
- Verify fuel is clean and free of water
- Check/replace fuel filter
- Bleed fuel system of air
- Test fuel lift pump operation
- Inspect fuel shut-off solenoid
- Have injectors tested if other checks pass
Prevention
Regular maintenance including fuel filter changes, fuel quality monitoring, and periodic system bleeding prevents most fuel-related starting problems.
