Why Air Filter Replacement Matters
The air filter prevents dust and debris from entering your Perkins engine’s cylinders. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, reducing power output and increasing fuel consumption. For Perkins generator engines, regular air filter replacement is essential.
Tools Needed
- New Perkins air filter (verify part number)
- Standard wrench set
- Clean rags
- Silicone grease (for gasket)
Step-by-Step Replacement
Step 1: Shut Down the Generator
Ensure the generator is completely stopped and cooled before starting work.
Step 2: Locate the Air Filter Housing
The air filter housing is typically located on the side of the engine. Follow the air intake duct from the turbocharger to find it.
Step 3: Remove the Housing Cover
Loosen the clamps or bolts holding the air filter housing cover. Carefully remove the cover.
Step 4: Remove the Old Filter
Pull the old filter element straight out. Inspect it for contamination — heavy dirt or damage indicates the replacement was overdue.
Step 5: Clean the Housing
Wipe the inside of the housing with a clean, damp rag. Remove any debris or dirt that could contaminate the new filter.
Step 6: Install the New Filter
Place the new filter in the housing, ensuring it seats properly. Apply a thin coat of silicone grease to the gasket surface if needed.
Step 7: Reassemble
Replace the housing cover and tighten the clamps or bolts. Don’t over-tighten.
Step 8: Test Run
Start the generator and verify it runs normally. Check for any air leaks around the filter housing.
Replacement Intervals
- Normal conditions: Every 500-1000 hours
- Dusty conditions: Every 250-500 hours
- Annually: At minimum, regardless of hours
